Document Checklist to Study in Malaysia from Bangladesh

Studying in Malaysia is an exciting opportunity for Bangladeshi students, offering quality education and a multicultural environment. However, both students and parents should be aware of the documents needed to apply for admission and obtain a student visa (Student Pass). This friendly guide breaks down the document checklists for each academic level – Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD – so you can prepare everything you need. Having your paperwork ready in advance makes the application process smoother and less stressful for you.
Document requirements in Malaysia are not “one checklist for everything.” They change based on (1) which stage you are in and (2) which programme level you are applying for. This guide explains the checklist in a clear, step-by-step way so students and parents can prepare confidently and avoid unnecessary delays.
The Two Stages That Decide Your Document Requirements
Most students go through two major stages:
- Before e-VAL Application (Admission + EMGS preparation)
- Before SEV Application (after e-VAL approval)
Each stage requires different documents, and research programmes (Master’s by Research/PhD) need additional items.
Stage 1: Before e-VAL Application (Admission & EMGS Preparation)

This stage focuses on building a strong admission case and keeping the file “EMGS-ready.” The following documents are the most critical.
Passport:
The passport must have at least 18 months validity from the date of application. If the passport is close to expiry, renewing early prevents complications later in the visa stage.
Passport Photo:
A correct photo avoids resubmission issues. Required conditions:
- White background
- Size: 45mm × 35mm
- No eyeglasses
- No head covering (except religious reasons, and facial features must remain visible)
- Taken within the last 6 months
For more specific instructions on passport photo, please refer to the EMGS Website.
Academic Certificates & Transcripts:
This is one of the most common reasons for delay.
- Provisional certificates/transcripts can help receive a conditional offer letter.
- For EMGS application, original certificates and transcripts must be submitted to avoid processing delay or visa rejection.
Programme-based focus:
- Foundation/Diploma: SSC/O-Level/Dakhil
- Bachelor’s: HSC/A-Level/Alim
- Master’s/PhD: Bachelor’s and Master’s credentials
English Proficiency Certificate (ELP):
Applying without ELP results in a conditional offer letter. It is possible to move forward without ELP in some cases, but it makes the application case weaker.
Key points students and parents should know:
- ELP is a mandatory requirement by the university and Malaysian immigration.
- It must be submitted before registering into the main course.
- Without ELP, the student may be required to enroll in an English Language Programme without any choice. These courses are usually expensive.
Common English tests among Bangladeshi students:
IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Linguaskill (many universities accept online exam versions as well). Minimum score requirements differ by programme and university, so checking requirements before sitting for the exam is essential. (Hey ! Do you know we have a special english test support system?)
Undergraduate-level applications usually end with the documents above. For Master’s and PhD, a few more documents become important and often expected.
Job Experience Letter:
This is especially important when:
- The candidate’s CGPA is below 2.75, or
- The candidate is applying for a programme outside the previous academic/professional background.
In these cases, candidates are often expected to show 3–5 years of job experience, unless they are a fresh graduate. (Internship counts for a fresh graduate.)
CV / Resume (Expected for Master’s/PhD):
For postgraduate applicants, a CV is important because it connects prior education and experience with future academic goals. It helps universities understand readiness, progression, and relevance.
Research Proposal:
This is a key document for research programmes. For Master’s by Research and PhD, the research proposal often plays a deciding role in receiving the offer letter. A strong proposal can strengthen the admission case significantly.
Recommendation Letter:
Recommendation letters are a plus for Master’s and PhD candidates. Submitting one or two letters from lecturers, supervisors, or corporate mentors can strengthen the profile.
Stage 2: Before SEV Application (After eVAL Approval)

Once the eVAL is received, the process shifts toward Malaysian embassy requirements. This stage is mainly about confirming single entry visa to enter into Malaysia from Bangladesh.
EMGS Approval Letter & e-VAL (Understanding the EMGS %)
This is where many students get confused, so it helps to understand the typical flow:
- e-VAL processing typically takes around 4–6 weeks from the date of payment and submission.
- At around 35% EMGS processing, the EMGS approval letter can be downloaded.
For e-VAL, applications typically need to reach around 70% progress.
Family Photo:
A group photo of family members is required where at least the primary family members are present.
Source of Income:
Common sponsor proof documents include:
- Sponsor’s Employment ID
- Job Verification Letter
- Trade License (if sponsor is a business owner)
Bank Statement (3–6 Months):
A sponsor’s 3–6 months current bank statements are required. The final balance should cover at least the first-year cost, and depending on university selection, the amount commonly ranges from BDT 5 lakhs to 15 lakhs.
Reason to Study in Malaysia / SOP:
A short SOP is helpful for visa strength. It should clearly explain why Malaysia fits the student’s academic direction and future plan.
Bonus Tips That Prevent Processing Delays
MOI Letter Can Replace ELP (In Specific Cases):
Many universities accept a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter as a replacement for ELP certificates for Master’s and PhD candidates only. If the previous institution provides MOI, the candidate may not need to sit for an English test. English medium students from all levels may also have this advantage depending on the institution.
Scan Quality Matters More Than Most People Expect:
All documents are submitted online. Immigration may request resubmission if scans contain:
dust spots, shadows, blur elements, torn edges, or cropped areas. This can delay processing significantly, so high-quality scanning is not optional.
Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. Malaysia Study Guide supports Bangladeshi students from program selection to final submission. In EMGS and visa documentation, one small mistake like a cropped page, wrong format, or mismatched details can cause delays or even rejection. That is why we review your documents carefully, follow the latest requirements, and help you submit correctly the first time, so you and your parents can stay stress-free.
